Ho‘i i ka Mole (Waipahu)

Waipahu, O‘ahu

Summer 2023

Grades:

Pre-K

Program Information:

Keiki and their makua will experience a family child interaction learning program where keiki will gain literacy and STEAM skills and makua will learn how they can support their children’s growth and development and be their keiki’s first and most important teacher.

Each session, hands-on and rich in Hawaiian values and culture, will enable the participants to learn about native plants, ‘oli and mele. Participants will go to an excursion to Papahana Kuaola where they will learn about invasive plants and its effect on the environment and how to prepare the lo‘i for planting. Three speakers will be brought in and participants will experience or learn about subjects like lauhala weaving and poi making.

The keiki will be able to extend their learning into their home as they will receive a backpack with books and the tools they used to explore the world of plants.

Also, in recognition of the high cost of gasoline, families will receive a gift card for gas to alleviate the cost to travel to and from the program site.
