National Tropical Botanical Garden

'Ike Māla (Grades 6 - 8)

Program Information:

Ahupuaʻa based learning using garden and canoe plants to cultivate pride in Hawaiian values and promot ʻōiwi leadership, ʻIke Māla utilizes our gardens resources and location to reinforce strong biocultural influences of traditional wisdom in aloha ʻāina, malama ʻāina and kūleana.


Activities for kamaliʻi include:

  • Planting native plants and canoe plants and learning the Hawaiian names and importance to culture and ecosystem function.

  • Lei making.

  • Coconut leaf weaving

  • Aho making

  • Mālama māla

  • Mokoi and ʻupena lessons

  • Ti leaf Skirt making

  • Hula

  • Makahiki Games

We are collaborating with Cognitive Learning Center of Kauaʻi Community College on lessons and our garden staff will deliver the activities.


Grade Levels:

We are offering two concurrently running programs, grades 3-5 and 6-8. Both age groups will be exposed to the same lessons with interpretation at levels that make it easy to relate to and possibliy familiar to them as they may have been exposed to these values at home.
