Dry Box Builds: Haumana worked in the carpentry shop to build dry boxes. They learned to use basic tools, such as hammers and drills to complete their builds. They also painted their boxes. These boxes would later be used to dry herbs for our pizza sauce.

Farm Beautification: Haumana worked on two murals for our farm beautification projects, one by local artist Solomon Enos and the other by Sergio Mitrotti, a long time friend of the farm. Haumana learned new art terms, such as depth, hue and complementary colors.

Kuleana: Haumana learned early on the meaning of kuleana and took great pride in their responsibilities during their days at the farm. From tending to the fields, to washing produce, to caring for the animals, students gained a deep understanding of the idea that the farm takes care of us, so we must take care of the farm.

Cooking: Haumana learned about different herbs, which they then dried in their dry boxes and used in their homemade pizza sauce. They also made homemade pizza dough for our Ho’ike (Pizza Party). Keiki also enjoyed harvesting fruits at the farm and using the Blender Bike to make smoothies for snack time.

Container Gardens: Haumana got to learn about the importance and simplicity of container gardening and were able to assemble and take home their own! They also used the Blender Bike to make a non-toxic pesticide to take home using Neem leaves harvested at the farm.

S.T.E.M. Challenges: Haumana participated in several “mini” S.T.E.M Challenges including an Egg Drop challenge, Boat Building, Paper Plane Challenge and more! These were great team building activities and a nice way to escape the sun for a bit!

Hōʻike: Haumana worked hard to prep for our Hōʻike! They died paper using beets to create invitations for their Ohana, harvested produce for salad, and prepped pizzas. Haumana also enjoyed learning how to play traditional Hawaiian games, such as Ulu Maika and Moa Pahe’e. They were able to teach their Ohana how to play at our Hōʻike!
